Chalazion - Acute

Definition

An acute or chronic inflammatory lipogranuloma on the eyelid

Findings

* Lump in eyelid

* Swelling of eyelid

Differential Diagnosis

* Stye

* Preseptal cellulitis

* Viral conjunctivitis - Acute

* Pyogenic granuloma

* Neoplasm of skin of eyelid

Treatment

Drug Therapy

Treatment of infected chalazion to follow incision and drainage

SULFACETAMIDE SODIUM

Adults: 1-2 drops into lower conjunctival sac every 2-4 hours OR small amount of ointment applied topically to affected area 3 times daily and at bedtime for 3-4 days following incision and drainage

Alternative therapy or adjunct to incision and drainage of chalazion

TRIAMCINOLONE ACETONIDE

Adults: Up to 1 mg per injection site infiltrated within lesion, repeated at 1-week or less frequent intervals as needed

Topical anesthesia prior to lidocaine infiltration for surgical treatment of chalazion

LIDOCAINE/PRILOCAINE

Local anesthesia prior to surgical treatment of chalazia

LIDOCAINE HYDROCHLORIDE

Procedural Therapy

CHALAZION

* Local anesthetic infiltration of eyelid: Applying lidocaine/prilocaine cream 1 hour prior to the infiltration of warmed lidocaine reduces the pain of incision and drainage of a chalazion .

CHALAZION

* Incision AND drainage: A chalazion should be incised and drained when it is fluctuant, suppurative, and pointing.

Non-Procedural Therapy
