Definition
An acute or chronic inflammatory lipogranuloma on the eyelid
Findings
* Lump in eyelid
* Swelling of eyelid
Differential Diagnosis
* Stye
* Preseptal cellulitis
* Viral conjunctivitis - Acute
* Pyogenic granuloma
* Neoplasm of skin of eyelid
Treatment
Drug Therapy
Treatment of infected chalazion to follow incision and drainage
SULFACETAMIDE SODIUM
Adults: 1-2 drops into lower conjunctival sac every 2-4 hours OR small amount of ointment applied topically to affected area 3 times daily and at bedtime for 3-4 days following incision and drainage
Alternative therapy or adjunct to incision and drainage of chalazion
TRIAMCINOLONE ACETONIDE
Adults: Up to 1 mg per injection site infiltrated within lesion, repeated at 1-week or less frequent intervals as needed
Topical anesthesia prior to lidocaine infiltration for surgical treatment of chalazion
LIDOCAINE/PRILOCAINE
Local anesthesia prior to surgical treatment of chalazia
LIDOCAINE HYDROCHLORIDE
Procedural Therapy
CHALAZION
* Local anesthetic infiltration of eyelid: Applying lidocaine/prilocaine cream 1 hour prior to the infiltration of warmed lidocaine reduces the pain of incision and drainage of a chalazion .
CHALAZION
* Incision AND drainage: A chalazion should be incised and drained when it is fluctuant, suppurative, and pointing.
